About
plastic surgery
Plastic
surgery is the blending of art, medicine, and surgery. The special
form of surgery makes it possible for a certified doctor to mold
or reform the human body. The procedures that heal and restore
patients with deformities from injury, disease, or birth defects
are called reconstructive. The procedures that change or enhance
appearance by reshaping facial and other body features are called
aesthetic or cosmetic.
About being a good candidate
People
who know what they want and why, make the perfect candidates.
They elected to have an operation to correct a specific problem
and are realistic about the results of the surgery.
About the consultation
We
are deeply concerned that our patients are well educated regarding
any surgical procedure which they are contemplating. During the
patient's initial consultation, Dr. Coleman will discuss in detail
the patient's goals, the options for the treatment, the expected
results, and the possible risks. We have a wide variety of excellent
literature and audio/visual programs designed to help the patient
understand the surgical correction of his or her problem.
About pain and scars
During
the procedure, the patient is given a local sedation or general
anesthesia. There should be no discomfort or pain during the procedure.
After the procedure, the patient will experience some discomfort
but it is only temporary.
Scarring
is nature's way of healing itself. Fortunately, not all scars
become prominent or unsightly. Plastic surgeons use meticulous
techniques and fine sutures to produce a fine line which is barely
visible. A scar is a normal endpoint of all healing. All incisions
will heal with a scar. Since the healing of tissues is affected
by many factors, some of which are beyond the control of the surgeon,
there are no guarantees.
About post operation life
After
the operation, the patient's body needs time to heal. Most cases
involve time away from work. The patient must understand that
any discomfort he or she feels will go away with time. However,
in certain cases such as breast enlargements or reductions; the
scars, although hidden, are usually permanent. The exact time
a patient can return to his or her social life or work is stated
in the individual section for each procedure. The same is true
for the removal of stitches and follow-up visits.
About payment and managed care
At the time of the patient's visit, he or she will be given a
cost estimate. Fees for a plastic surgeon's services vary widely,
depending on the complexity and extent of the procedure and the
problem being corrected. Additional expenses will be incurred
depending upon the type of anesthesia and where the surgery takes
place. All of this will be discussed during the initial consultation.
Insurance
- Health insurance generally covers the cost of reconstructive
procedures, but usually will not cover purely cosmetic procedures.
Since individual insurance policies vary, our office will contact
the patient's insurance carrier for a predetermination of his
or her benefits. When appropriate, we will file insurance claims
for services rendered.
